Singapore has long been a petrochemical hub. Singapore benefits from petrol companies. Petrol companies dislike hybrid cars.

Hi Hun Boon

Nice article. I agree there is reform required.

I feel to "incentivise" green vehicles will results in a loss of revenue (from ARF) for the government. As such, it comes down to how much the government is willing to lose in revenue in order to do their bit for the environment.

Hope you can continue to voice out so that their is a mindset shift that encourages the government to accept lower vehicle revenue for green vehicles.

I recently moved back to Singapore from Texas where I still keep a 6.1 liter 550hp Dodge Charger SRT-8. Classic American muscle car (built for US$ 1.50 a gallon in the US currently). However when I came to Singapore I wanted to go Green. Based on the cost of a hybrid and the terrible economics I decided to pass and bought a used Honda Odessey for the family. Now I want a car to go to and from work. For this I want an electric car. I am looking at everything from Tesla to Reva to a electric motorcycle. I am surprised to learn there is such disincentive to electric vehicles. In London a friend gave up his Bently for a used G-Wiz from Reva. Ugly cat but it fully payed for itself within 8 months as it was exempt from road tax, congestion fees, and in some cases parking charges. I would appreciate your thoughts on this reformed gas-guzzling lead footed American can get an electric vehicle that will be cost effective. Thank you.

I can you tell why this strange phenomenon is happening. Because this is really calculated and planned by the tax department under Ministry of Finance. Not the Ministry of Environment (which incidentally only recently really started to understand costs on environment).

What is even more strange is that the purchase price of a hybrid car is substantially higher than its gas-counterpart. I heard is got something to do with import price which I do not understand.
