People know Star Bamboo for our eco-friendly bamboo flooring, but we also offer other bamboo products. One of our most popular and versatile products is bamboo veneer.

Bamboo veneer are thin sheets of bamboo material, with a frieze cotton backing to minimise breakage. They typically come in 4′ by 8′ sheets of 0.6mm thickness, and are made by thinly slicing big blocks of bamboo material.

The beauty of bamboo veneer is its flexibility. Our bamboo material, like that of bamboo flooring, is very hard and strong. But this strength can be a double-edged sword, making it difficult to mould and press.

Bamboo veneer, on the other hand, is so flexible that it can be used to wrap curved surfaces. The most popular application of bamboo veneer is on kitchen and bedroom cabinets.

But it can be so much more than that.

Just check out this new range of Bambu furniture by a Finnish company called Artek. The outstanding point of this furniture is the curves:

These pieces are made from plywood with a bamboo veneer. Plywood can be steam heated and moulded into shapes that solid bamboo material cannot. The bamboo veneer completes the look for an eco-friendly flavour.

Well, I wouldn’t go as far as to call these bamboo furniture, nor are they as green as 100% bamboo furniture. But it certainly shows off the unique grains of bamboo beautifully.

Next, I’m going to show you one of the most innovative use of bamboo veneer I have come across:

This is the majestic Terminal 4 of Madrid’s Barajas airport. The entire roof is made up of 200,000 square meters of bamboo plywood.

It is actually made from 5 layers of 1mm thick bamboo veneer, with alternating layers running cross-grain for added dimensional stability and strength. I bet you never realised that bamboo veneer could be so strong.

This bamboo material was supplied by a Spanish company called Tuka Bamboo, but they sourced the material from China (little surprise there).

In fact, you can order the exact same bamboo plywood from us as well – Just contact me with your needs.

I hope this entry has given you more ideas on how bamboo can be incorporated into your designs. Venture beyond bamboo flooring, and you’ll see a whole new world of possibilities.
